SCIENCE BABY -- West Newbury, MA (December 28, 2025) -- This is a young Highland Cattle calf named Kevin who lives down the road from me. Friendly and gentle, he is quietly looking down through his long lashes, and the December sun is shining beautifully on his lustrous hair. He comes across as polite, modest, low-key, unpretentious. He is also munching on a discarded Christmas tree. (Kevin is also basically a "test tube baby" -- he was born from an unrelated dairy cow mother in whom his embryo had been implanted.)
PINE POLLEN BLUES -- West Newbury, MA (June 9, 2024) -- After a rainy week in June, a dog named Molly ran through the thick layer of tree pollen floating in a puddle at the corner of our driveway, and inadvertently created swirling, strangely beautiful patterns in the shallow water. Here the yellowish pollen is tinted blue.
LIQUID LANDSCAPE (OAK CREEK CANYON) -- Slide Rock State Park, Arizona (January 12, 2026) -- The angle of morning light and the sun's brushwork on flowing water create a dynamic abstract painting. The creek reflects and refracts the red rock and blue sky above and the filtered green of the creek bed below.
GREEN PARADISE -- Peneda-Geres National Park, Portugal (June 27, 2025) -- The Seven Lagoons are a series of spectacular, natural, jewel-like rock pools full of clear, cool, green-emerald-turquoise water, all connected by waterfalls along the Cabril River in Portugal. A visit to these pools can bring one close to paradise for a few hours.
OLD COLORS REVEALED -- New York City (October 11, 2025) -- This old wall has hosted many street art murals at 8th Avenue and 13th Street in New York, and now is in the midst of another transformation. (The wall, part of a 19th century building, is at the edge of the Mobil Mart which is the last gas station in lower Manhattan and the home of a gourmet burger eatery called the Smacking Burger.)
END OF THE PARADE -- Newburyport, MA (May 31, 2025)
ONLY THE WIND -- Maia, Sao Miguel Island, Azores (June 15, 2025) -- This is the red-doored ruins of an old mill building on the northern coast of Sao Miguel Island in the Azores. There are no roads to these public watermills that were driven by streams running down the steep slopes and which historically allowed poor, subsistence farmers to grind their small grain harvests into flour. They were abandoned during the 20th century as many residents emigrated.
OAK CREEK CANYON CONTRAILS -- Slide Rock State Park, Arizona (January 12, 2026) -- This was the embodiment of a fleeting moment: the ephemeral contrails from three passing planes created a brief geometric grid that fit exactly around the undulating landscape of the ancient red rock in Oak Creek Canyon.
GRAND CANYON GOLDEN HOUR -- Bright Angel Trail at Grand Canyon Village, Arizona (January 12, 2026)
BOYNTON CANYON CAVES -- Sedona, Arizona (January 10, 2026)
ILLUMINATED -- New York, NY (March 14, 2026) -- This UPS shipping facility is lit up by the morning sun reflecting off windows of a Google office building across the street, illuminating it with short-lived vertical bars of glowing light. The vivid murals on the loading dock doors were painted by students and the nonprofit Publicolor to transform the streetscape in the Hudson Square neighborhood of New York City.
AFTER THE SONGS HAVE BEEN SUNG -- Exeter, New Hampshire (January 23, 2026) -- This is a stage in a small performing arts venue called The Word Barn. The show is over. The musicians are gone, but their microphones and instruments remain, grouped around the figures in the surreal backdrop. There are many layers here. The mural is salvaged street art, old trailer doors painted in 2011 by the international artistic duo Herakut in Portsmouth, NH. The figures in the mural are inspired by a poem called "Milking," written in 1872 by Celia Thaxter. The artist Hera is galvanized by fables and fairytales, stories filled with animal metaphors and exploring the human condition. The adaptations keep unfolding. Art builds on art.
TENEMENTS AND TOWERS -- New York, NY (March 14, 2026) -- Old tenements lining Henry Street in NYC's Chinatown and the Lower East Side have been joined by a new residential tower looming above. The stepped balconies of the new tower resonate with the old metal fire escape stairs angling down the front of the tenements.
SUN ON CATHEDRAL ROCK -- Sedona, Arizona (January 9, 2026)
FALL IS COMING -- Albany, NH (September 28, 2025)
GOLDEN-HAIRED BEAUTY -- Plevenon, France (July 3, 2024)
